A friend of mine posted this phrase, “Fall of a sudden it’s autumn” on her Facebook status the other day, and I haven’t been able to let go of it since. Here’s a poem to placate the Muse; hope it suits!

Fall of a Sudden It’s Autumn

Fall of a sudden, it’s Autumn –

sticky, Southern summer heat giving way

to chilly, sweater-mornings; brisk days melting

with incremental haste into cool dusks

and long, then longer, October nights.

The air is bathed in seasonal unguent:

Slowly dying leaves and sharp, acrid smoke.

From a neighbor’s window, pungent pumpkin pie

announces itself for dessert; olfactory delight

losing at hide-and-seek played against the wind.

Urgency is the order of each day:

Birds raucously herald looming year’s-end,

Harbingers of imminent winter, while

Academics scramble to gather notes and

Squirrels scramble to gather stores.

Fall of a sudden, it’s Autumn –

I, for one, am glad to see Summer go

His merry way, He is too much for me.

I am glad to embrace Autumn and feel

Her cool, graceful fingers soothingly stroke my head.
